Ludo is a 9 month old Crossbreed Terrier and is currently on foster in Abingdon.

    The Ludo Fact File

Dog status: Good but an excitable Terrier puppy.
    Cat status: Unknown
Child status: Good, but is still a mouthy excitable older puppy so recommended for over 10's only
    House training: Nearly there
Home alone: Has been crate trained by his foster home and is happy in there for a few hours at a time. He will not be suitable for full time workers due to his age but may be able to be left part time.
Basic training: Learning the basics. Definitely needs further training and would benefit from puppy class – food/toy orientated and a quick learner.

Ludo is a non-stop bundle of fun! He is a blank canvas waiting for someone to take him forwards in a forever home, show him the world and shape him for the future. However he seems to have had very little input in the critical first few months so will need a dedicated experienced owner.

Ludo is living in a foster home with adult dogs and is always looking for a playmate. He would therefore need a confident and very tolerant dog in his new home; or maybe another bonkers dog to keep up! Ludo can also be rehomed as the only dog with lots of human company. Ludo has yet to meet dogs outside his foster home as he has only just received his second vaccination. He will need further socialisation to make these meetings a positive experience and for him to learn an appropriate response – rather than getting excited and barky if he cannot play. He is still young and taking him to puppy class will be a requirement of his adoption.

Ludo has not been living in foster care with cats or small animals.
As Ludo wasn’t vaccinated when he moved into foster he hasn’t met a huge variety of people outside the home. He has shown no signs of aggression or fear towards people but can be barky but this is most likely due to excitement and lack of socialisation and should be relatively easy to overcome. He is still in the mouthy stage of puppyhood and is learning how to use his mouth appropriately. Therefore we feel he would be better with children over the age of 10 years. Small children running, squeaking and playing would at this stage over stimulate him.

Ludo arrived in foster with no basic training at all but they have been working hard with fun training using positive reinforcement and clicker training and he is doing very well. He has learnt to sit, the beginnings of recall and to bring toys for swaps and rewards. We presume he has been chased in the past for “stealing” things as he initially found it self rewarding to run away with things. He has not been destructive in the home but is given appropriate things to chew to set him up for the correct behaviour. He has started basic lead training but this will need work out with the home. He is a smart cookie though and will be a pleasure to work with.

Ludo’s house training is nearly there as long as he is supervised and given regular access to the garden. He is learning to travel well in the car and settles down relatively quickly after being helped into the car. He is crate trained and has been left for a few hours and after initial barking has settled down well. He wouldn’t be suitable for full time workers but depending on times he may for the right home be suitable for part time workers. He is clean and settled overnight.

Ludo can be wary of new experiences and people and will need help to grow in to a confident dog. He can sometimes bark when he hears novel noises and can bark in the garden if he feels there is something going on that he is not sure about. He has also barked at some people outside. His foster home are working on this by ensuring he is rewarded for showing a more appropriate behaviour. This reward based training and socialisation will need to continue in a new home and be a real focus for his training.

In summary, Ludo has the potential to be an amazing dog with the correct input from experienced owners. They will need to work hard on his socialisation to prevent his barking becoming a problem and on his training to allow him to have an active fulfilled life. At the moment Ludo is all go and never stops so in an active home he may never settle, while in a calmer environment with regular physical and mental activity he should calm down. Ludo will proportionally give back what is put in.

All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered (if over 6 months), vaccinated, flea treated, wormed and micro-chipped prior to adoption. If a puppy is not old enough to be neutered then this must be carried out at the owner’s expense when old enough, and the relevant form completed by the vet and returned to Hope Rescue. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. Hope Rescue rehomes throughout the UK. A Pre-Home Interest Form can be downloaded from www.hoperescue.org.uk and should be returned to dogs@hoperescue.org.uk
